The epic of Ibalong is undoubtedly one of the greatest epics not only of Bicol or Luzon but of the entire country. It portrays the customs, traditions and beliefs of early Bicolanos which are still practiced nowadays. It tells us about the rich culture of the Bicolanos and is somewhat like a testament on how the Bicoalno trademarks and culture came to be. It also narrates the story of the three great Bicolano heroes who directly and indirectly molded the traditions and beliefs of the Bicolanos.
The epic had several ups and downs and inconsistencies in its story like why wasn't the Mayon Volcano when all other notable landmarks of Albay like the Lignon hill were described? I'ts also a mind teaser why other places and landmarks outside of Albay were stated and included in the story when the word Ibalong can be closely related to Legazpi City or Albay only. But nonetheless, it can still be considered one of the greatest epics of the Philippines. I believe that these minor trivialities do not demerit it's greatness and significance to the Bicolanos in any manner whatsoever. Personally, i think that the epic is very essential in establishing, strengthening and understanding the complex and varied but rich culture of the Bicolanos. I also firmly believe that the epic of Ibalong may in a way, serve as a basis for establishing regional identity. The epic offers rich descriptions and stories about the dealings and heroisms of several important characters as well as the beliefs, traditions and culture of the Bicolanos which could be used as a reference and a testament that only true blooded Bicolanos possess and practice these folkways. Knowing and understanding this will further strengthen their identity and sense of unity. The presence of the three great heroes in the epic is also something that's really commendable or rather appreciable for me. I believe that the epic would not have been more influential than it is now if not for the colorful and astonishing feats that these characters have performed.
The epic of Ibalong proved to be very influential to the people of the Bicol Region and it isvery obvious that without its existence, Bicolanos would never be the same as they are now. The epic is also something that Bicoalnos should take pride with for it is an wxceptional piece of literature which somehow describes a true Bicolano.
